Prioritizing the Standards: A NESC Collaborative Project
The NESC is seeking K-12 educators of English Language Arts and Mathematics to be involved in this important work!

We have learned through our extensive work with Marzano Research that a viable curriculum (a well-articulated set of knowledge and skills that every child should learn in grades K-12) is a must for schools to be successful. Viable also means it can be taught for understanding in the time available!
Research states that 12-20 priority learning goals per grade level and content area is most effective for student success. The current North Dakota standards have more than the recommended 12-20 priority learning goals per grade level. English Language Arts (ELA) standards number 37-41 per grade level. Mathematics standards number 22-43 per grade level (with the average number being 27 per grade level). The time it takes to address the currently identified essential content does not align with the hours available for instruction.
*View the 2017 ELA and Math content standards on the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction website here.

The NESC educator group that is formed for this project will be working with the 2017 North Dakota English Language Arts Content Standards and the 2017 North Dakota Mathematics Content Standards to create a list of 12-20 priority learning goals per grade level. Considerations will be made regarding 'need to know,' 'important to know and do,' and 'nice to know' according to five criteria for priority that will be taught during the session:
1.Endurance
2.Leverage
3.Readiness for next level of learning
4.Teacher judgement
5.Assessment connection

We are looking for NESC-member educators who enjoy collegial conversations about curriculum and instruction, and who are interested in a study of enhanced viability of the new, North Dakota content standards.

This work is relevant for all NESC-member schools and directly supports the High Reliability Schools and the AdvancED school improvement frameworks. The priority standards lists that result from this session will be available to NESC-member schools. The NESC hopes to continue the work into the 2017-18 school year by assembling educator groups to create proficiency scales for all prioritized standards, which can be used to drive instruction and assessment.
