NESC 2021 Fall Regional In-service: Improve Every Lesson Plan with SEL

TOPIC: SEL

Jeffrey Benson, ASCD

8:45 – 10:15 AM CST                                    90-minute keynote

This session will be recorded and available toNESC schools throughout the school year.

Improve Every Lesson Plan with SEL

Description: Supporting students to develop their social andemotional skills (SEL) is a task all teachers--which means every adult whointeracts with young people in schools-- have always considered part of ourwork.  We randomly prompt students tolisten respectfully, to ask for what they need, to have goals for themselves, and to be responsible members of their communities.

Modern brain research hasalso identified that mastery of academics is dependent on social and emotionalcompetencies.  Leveraging SEL skillsincreases academic success. We’ve known that since we were kids; when we weremotivated and supported we did more work and better managed our frustrations inorder to reach mastery.

In this keynote, ASCD authorand long- time teacher and school leader, Jeffrey Benson, will provide veryspecific strategies and activities that take what we are now doing-- our randomand implicit prompts and praise to use SEL skills-- and make that an explicitand intentional component within our daily work. This is not anothercurriculum, not a panacea, and not a way to trick students into doing theirwork. By integrating SEL skills into our daily interactions and lessons, werelentlessly build student competencies, harness their attention to the deeperpurposes of the lessons, and have a lasting impact on how students seethemselves as members of their communities in and out of school. This keynoteis an  inspiration for the coming schoolyear, reminding us all why we really wanted to work in schools with youngpeople.

NESC 2021 Regional Fall In-service: The Innovator’s Mindset

George Couros

10:30 AM – 12:00 PM CST      90-minute keynote

This session will NOT be recorded.

The Innovator’s Mindset

Description: Carol Dweck’s work has focused onthe ideas of “fixed” and “growth” mindset, yet educators will need to go a stepfurther with these notions to create the learning opportunities and that ourstudents and schools deserve. We need to focus not only what we know, but whatwe do with what we know. In this talk, George will discuss the idea andcharacteristics of “The Innovator’s Mindset” (asdiscussed in the book of the same title) and share persuasive examples onwhy this is so crucial for all educators. George’s presentations are known tobe emotional, humorous, all while pushing your thinking, and will connect toyour heart first, in a way that will last with you long after this keynote.

Components of the following presentation also included:

Empowering Parents in the Processof Learning
Description:Parent involvement in the learning process of schools is the number one factorfor student success.  As schools look forward to using social media toimprove learning in their schools, many parents are fearful of what this means. Social media provides an opportunity for parents to have meaningfulengagement in the learning of their children.  This can significantlychange the conversations not only at school but also at home with the child. This talk provides peace of mind to parents while also engaging them inconsidering the unique opportunity they have to participate in their child’slearning.

Equity Through Expert Noticing

Description: What does it mean to be an expert noticer?  Expert noticers observe and respond to patternsof information that are not noticed by novices. Teachers make on average 1,500 decisions each andevery day. Experts are ableto recognize fundamental notions and core principles so they are able to see“beneath the surface” and recognize significant issues that might escape theattention of the less trained eye (Johnson, Uline, & Perez, 2011). Thissession will focus on examining some of the inequities that exist in the areaof classroom assessment and how we can respond to those inequities throughensuring students have access and exposure to surface, deep and transferlearning partnered with focused and timely feedback.
